So it was all of 5 days ago a forex day trading signal service I use foresaw a number of forces aligning to predict a strengthening USD and as a result falling stock prices. The next Fed POMO Schedule 2011 is out and we’ve had a chance to digest it. Interesting to note is the occurance of some TIPS purchases in the mix. TIPS for those not familiar with the acronym are Treasury Inflation Protected Securities. Taking a quick gander at the schedule tells me that the highest dollar pressure days will be March 15,17,18 then the 25th-31st followed by the 5th of April through the 12th. I write a lot about day trading news releases, or more importantly forex movements of the major currencies. The reasoning is simple: when the forex market traders take (or unwind) large positions in a particular currency pair, stock markets around the world are immediately impacted by money multipliers. Right now the number one un-leveraged (or infinitely leveraged depending on your view of these things) is the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Here’s a schedule of when they will be playing and how much they intend to unilaterally move the markets. You can use this information to help you interpret the movements of forex markets and place better binary options trades. On days when treasury market actions settle and cash pours into the market – it has to go somewhere. In some cases it is going into treasuries (driving those securities higher) but in many cases money is relieved from weak positions and pushed out into riskier assets. So here we are day trading with QE2 day two, three days removed from the election and where has the market gone? UP UP UP. Is it just me or do the words of Henry Ford come to mind when thinking of the potential impact of QE2 on the stock market (sic): “You can have any market direction you choose, so long as you choose UP.” Obviously Mr. Ford was referring to his black only model-T Ford automobiles, but you get the gist of what I’m saying don’t you? Ways to Make Money Day Trading with QE2 I see a couple of potential ways to take advantage of the free money the Fed is printing for the banks. First and easiest is to just put my money into big stocks or index funds and simply float upward with the rising tide of free Fed money – but frankly that seems the slow way. A second alternative would be to go long some options calls on those same market indexes however present pricing for traditional options are carrying a relatively high premium due to the volatility index. Seriously. To make money day trading in this market you have to believe in the story of UP. As fundamentally unstable as the present economy is, the Federal Reserve has taken on the mandate of maintaining asset prices no matter the harm to the US Dollar. Having said that, investors need only know that the only way to escape the train wreck to come is to buy the story until we hit the final chapter… and who knows when that will be? As you might surmise, I have a pretty good guess. What the Fed DID NOT Say About QE2 So the Federal Reserve announced a second round of quantitative easing yesterday, indicating that more targeted long term treasury purchases were on the agenda. The impact of this debt buy out is to force yields down and out the duration curve – lowering borrowing costs and increasing incentives for investors to go longer term and higher risk with their investments. The problem with this strategy is the obvious “when will the music stop / when will the Fed stop propping up the markets / when will the bottom fall out from under me?” question.
